вЂњIt wasnвЂќt until I turned 30 that I had the idea of running a software company,вЂќ says Cohen. At nights and on weekends he also worked on ERwin. вЂњERwin helps people in big companies who need to build data bases,вЂќ says Cohen.ДЄfter finishing his studies at Stanford, Cohen went to work at the David Sarnoff Research Center in West Windsor, where he did research on software and data base languages. The software, which allows companies to design their own data bases quickly and easily through the use of graphic designs, won ReadersвЂќ Choice awards from DBMS magazine and DataBased Advisor in 1992.

The companyвЂќs main product is ERwin, which costs between $2,495 and $4,995, depending on the model. Now we sell thousands of copies,вЂќ says Cohen. вЂњOur first goal was to sell one copy, and after that the goal was to sell 100 copies. The company also has many overseas in Europe and Australia. Logic WorksвЂќ client list reads like a WhoвЂќs Who of American business and includes names like Microsoft, Merck and AT&T. We create easy-to-use products that solve companiesвЂќ problems.вЂќ вЂњWeвЂќre extremely efficient both in development and in sales. вЂњEvery quarter has been higher since January 1990,вЂќ says Cohen. As recently as 1990 the company had revenues of just $250,000. Logic Works had sales of $1.6 million in 1992, and he says revenues this year will top $4 million. вЂњLogic is a terrific background for running a software company,вЂќ he says.Д¬ohen, who has a doctorate in philosophy from Stanford, learned well. It was there that he first became acquainted with computers while studying logic. But Cohen, 41, wasnвЂќt like most Canadians, and after high school he headed off to California to study philosophy at Stanford University. вЂњMost Canadians donвЂќt aspire to move to the States,вЂќ says Cohen. In just five years, Cohen, a native of Ontario, has turned a one-person software company into a million dollar business that now has 20 employees.
